Light Engineering
Lasers have come of age. They are no longer in the realms of
fantasy and experts. The innovative design of the ULS
laser systems now
mean that laser cutting and engraving technology is available
to be used by anyone who can use a personal computer.
A PC now becomes genuinely creative. You get much more than
a piece of paper when you send a print file. You get something
tangible
and useful. A two dimensional drawing becomes a three dimensional
object.
In terms of speed of production, lasers are hard to beat. Parts
produced on lasers are free from contamination by cutting
oils, and free from defects caused by clamping and machining.
Parts
can be engraved with part numbers, date of manufacture, serial
numbers
and of course, company logos as they are produced. The positive
implications for your quality control department in this
respect are immense, but think further about how a laser could
be used
to indelibly engrave your products with a complete audit
trail of key manufacturing information by bar code to provide
100%
traceability.
Once the drawing has been made and the print file sent to
the laser, unskilled staff can undertake production.
Laser Cutting
The Universal laser systems are simple to operate and lend
themselves to cutting a wide variety of plastics, wood,
cork, card, cloth
etc. and numerous other exotic materials. Universal Systems
are designed to give you complete flexibility in terms
of power. Quick-Change laser cartridges are available from
between
25
Watts
to 60 Watts
in 5 Watt increments so you can select the most appropriate
level of power for your requirement. (X2-600 and Superspeed
machines
accept 2 laser cartridges allowing up to 120 Watts) Generally,
cutting tasks require higher power than engraving tasks,
however if your application is in cutting delicate and
fine materials
like fabric or card you will benefit from using a lower
power cartridge
as you will have a greater degree of control.
Because the cutting process is non-contact, there is not
usually a need for clamping and there is no contamination
from cutting
lubricants etc, so the process is by nature clean.
The part to be cut is drawn on a computer. The file is
then printed to the laser. The laser power and cutting
speed is
set in the
print properties dialogue box. Up to eight individual
power settings are configurable in a single drawing
file and
these are recognised
by the colours they are drawn in. You can therefore
arrange to cut and score or engrave a part to different depths
in a single
file.
Universal machines will retain the file in memory so
that the same part can be cut as many times as required,
other
files
can be sent
and returned to at any time. The time the process
takes is displayed so you will be able to plan a production
schedule.
Engraving
ULS lasers produce extremely high quality engraving
on a wide variety of materials.
The design of the motion system, laser tube and power
control ensures that a raster engraved image appears
as you intended.
The top access door provides full access to the entire
working area, allowing for speedy setup, loading
and unloading so
you will be assured of speedy production.
The X2-SuperSpeed Laser System has a unique dual
beam technology that engraves two side by side
raster lines
in each pass,
enabling an increase in production of up to 500%.
Much of the new technology that was developed for
the SuperSpeed has now been introduced into all
of the
Professional Range.
A new Windows 2000/XP driver is now available
with many new features.
A New Raster enhancement mode produces crisp
fine detail engraving over the full speed range
of the
machines.
Raster enhancements
work through a special method of processing
images that allows more precise laser power
control
during engraving
making
edges sharper and small details such as descenders
on small text
more bold.
Vector sorting and enhancement can be applied
to speed up production and set-up times. The
laser
will take
the shortest
routes to
complete the job and cut internal vectors of
components before the external
ones.
Improved control over greyscale images enables
smoother more detailed half-toning.
